Microsoft Authenticator is an optional way to complete Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) when signing into your Questar account.
You are not required to install Microsoft Authenticator on your personal phone. Questar IT will provide you with a physical security card that can be used instead.
If you are comfortable using your smartphone and prefer the convenience of approving sign-ins from your phone, follow the steps below. If at any point you'd like assistant please contact the helpdesk.
Before You Begin
- You will need:
- Your smartphone
- Access to your Questar email account
- A computer or another device where you can sign into your Questar Microsoft account
Step 1: Install Microsoft Authenticator
- On your smartphone, open the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- Search for:
- Microsoft Authenticator
- Make sure the app is published by Microsoft Corporation, then install the app.
Step 2: Open Your Questar Security Information
- On your computer, go to:
- https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info
- Sign in using your Questar email address and password.
- You may be asked to verify your identity using your existing MFA method.
Step 3: Add Microsoft Authenticator
- On the Security info page:
- Select Add sign-in method.
- Select Microsoft Authenticator.
- Select Add.
- Microsoft will walk you through the setup process.
- When a QR code appears on your computer screen, leave that page open.
Step 4: Add Your Questar Account to the App
- Open Microsoft Authenticator on your smartphone.
- Then select: Scan QR code using the blue circle icon in the lower right hand corner.
- If prompted, allow Microsoft Authenticator to use your camera. This is needed so the app can scan the QR code displayed on your computer.
- Use your phone to scan the QR code on the screen.
Step 5: Complete the Test
- Return to your computer and select Next.
- Microsoft will send a test notification to the Authenticator app on your phone.
- Open the notification and follow the instructions on your phone to approve the sign-in.
- Once Microsoft confirms the setup was successful, select Done.
- Microsoft Authenticator is now connected to your Questar account.
Using Microsoft Authenticator
When Microsoft asks you to verify your identity during a future sign-in, you may receive a notification on your phone.
Open Microsoft Authenticator and follow the instructions displayed on the screen.
You may also see Other ways to sign in on the Microsoft sign-in screen. This allows you to choose another authentication method, including your Questar-provided security card.
